Running and Walking Pace Calculator

What is my running pace?

Enter a distance and how long it took to see your pace per mile and per kilometer.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Works out your pace per mile and per kilometer and your average speed from a distance and a time, for a run or a walk.

How to use it

  1. Pick a common distance (such as 5K) or enter your own and choose miles or kilometers.
  2. Enter your time as 25:30 or 1:05:30.
  3. Read the pace per mile and per kilometer, then the average speed.

Minutes and seconds such as 25:30, or hours too such as 1:05:30, or just minutes such as 25.

How it works

Pace = time / distance. A 5K in 25:00 is 1,500 seconds over 3.107 miles, or 8:03 per mile (5:00 per kilometer).

Speed = distance / time: 7.5 mph, which is 12.0 km/h.

The same arithmetic serves a walk and a run, so there is one page for both.

Formulas and details
  • Pace per mile = time / miles.
  • Pace per kilometer = time / kilometers.
  • Speed = distance / time.

Assumptions

  • The distance and time are yours.
  • It is an average over the whole distance. Real pace changes during a run.
  • It does not judge whether a pace is good or fast.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: 5K in 25:00 is a pace of 8:03 per mile (5:00 per kilometer). That is an average speed of 7.5 mph (12.0 km/h). The same arithmetic works for a walk or a run.

Questions

Is walking pace different from running pace?

The arithmetic is the same: time divided by distance. Only the numbers differ, so one calculator covers both.

How do I enter a time over an hour?

Use hours, minutes and seconds with colons, such as 1:05:30.
