BMI Calculator

What is my BMI?

Enter your height and weight to see your body mass index and the CDC adult category it falls in.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Calculates BMI from height and weight and shows the CDC adult category the number falls in. It is not a measure of body fat or health.

How to use it

  1. Choose US units (pounds, feet and inches) or metric (kilograms and centimeters).
  2. Enter your weight and height. Age is optional.
  3. Read the BMI first, then the category the CDC lists for that number.

The CDC categories used here are for adults 20 and older.

How it works

BMI = weight in kilograms / height in meters squared. 160 pounds (72.6 kg) at 5 feet 8 inches (1.727 m) is 72.6 / 2.983 = 24.3.

The CDC page for adults 20 and older (read 2026-10-04) lists less than 18.5 as underweight, 18.5 to less than 25 as healthy weight, 25 to less than 30 as overweight and 30 or more as obesity. The page repeats those labels and adds none.

For a person under 20 the page does not give a category, because the CDC list that was read is for adults 20 and older.

Formulas and details
  • BMI = kg / m^2.
  • BMI = 703 x pounds / inches^2 (the same value in US units).

Assumptions

  • BMI is a screening number from height and weight. It does not measure body fat or health.
  • It does not account for muscle, age, sex, ethnicity or build.
  • The page does not set a goal weight or tell you to change.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Your BMI is about 24.3. On the CDC's adult BMI categories, 24.3 falls in the range the CDC calls "healthy weight" (18.5 to less than 25).

Questions

Is BMI a diagnosis?

No. It is a number from two measurements. A doctor looks at much more.

Why is there no category for a child?

The CDC list that was read is for adults 20 and older, so for anyone younger the page gives the number and no category.
