About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Shows the net extra cost of upgrading after what you get for the old one and the benefits you assign to the new one.

How to use it

  1. Enter the cost of the new one and what you could get for the old one.
  2. Enter the years you expect to use the new one.
  3. Optionally enter the value of the benefits to you per year.

Fill in the form and your answer will appear here.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Net extra cost = new cost - what you get for the old one - (benefit per year x years). $900 - $250 - 4 x $60 = $410.

That is $102.50 a year over 4 years.

Assumptions

  • The benefits are only the ones you enter: this page assigns no value to anything you did not.
  • Whether it is worth it is your decision.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Upgrading would cost you about $410.00 more than keeping what you have ($102.50 a year over 4 years), after the benefits you entered.

Questions

Is it worth upgrading?

That depends on what the benefits are worth to you. Enter that value and the page shows the net cost.

Can the net cost be negative?

Yes, if the benefits you entered are worth more than the extra cost.
