About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Shows what an extended warranty costs against the repair it might cover. It compares costs and never says whether to buy.

How to use it

  1. Enter the product price and the warranty cost.
  2. Enter a repair or replacement cost you want to test, and optionally your own chance of needing it.
  3. Read the covered cost at which it breaks even and the scenarios.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

If nothing goes wrong you are out the warranty cost, $79.99. If a covered $250 problem happens, you are $250 - $79.99 = $170.01 ahead.

The warranty breaks even when the covered problems cost more than $79.99. With a 20% chance of the $250 problem, the expected result is 0.20 x $250 - $79.99 = -$29.99.

Formulas and details
  • Net if nothing goes wrong = -warranty cost. Net with a covered problem = repair cost - warranty cost.
  • Expected net = chance x repair cost - warranty cost. Break-even covered cost = warranty cost.

Assumptions

  • This does not say whether to buy the warranty. It cannot predict failure.
  • A warranty may exclude some problems, have a deductible or overlap with a manufacturer warranty: read the terms.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The warranty costs $79.99. It pays for itself only if the problems it covers cost more than $79.99 in all; with your 20% guess, the expected result is -$29.99.

Questions

Is an extended warranty worth it?

This page cannot say. It shows what the warranty costs and what it would take for it to pay for itself.

Where does the chance come from?

It is your own guess. The page does not predict product failure.
