True Car Cost Calculator

What does my car really cost?

Add up everything your car costs from your own numbers, per month, per year and over several years.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Adds your car payment, insurance, fuel, maintenance and fees into a cost per month, per year and over 3 and 5 years, from numbers you enter.

How to use it

  1. Enter your car payment, insurance, miles per year, MPG, fuel price, maintenance, fees and other costs.
  2. Leave the loss in value at 0 if you finance the car, or enter it if you paid cash.
  3. Read the cost per month and per year, each line, and the 3-year and 5-year totals.

0 if the car is paid off.

Your own estimate: this page does not know what a car needs.

Leave at 0 if you finance: the payment already pays for the car, and adding both would count it twice.

How it works

Monthly figures are multiplied by 12: $450 x 12 = $5,400 for the payment, $130 x 12 = $1,560 for insurance and $40 x 12 = $480 for the other costs.

Fuel is the one worked-out line: 12,000 miles / 30 MPG = 400 gallons, times $3.50 = $1,400. Maintenance ($600) and fees ($150) are yearly figures as entered.

The yearly total is $5,400 + $1,560 + $1,400 + $600 + $150 + $480 = $9,590. A month is that divided by 12, $799.17. Three and five years are the yearly total times 3 and 5.

Assumptions

  • Every figure is one you entered, except fuel. The page does not know what a car needs, what insurance will do or what fuel will cost.
  • The 3-year and 5-year totals assume every figure stays the same.
  • If you finance the car, the payment already pays for it, so leave the loss in value at 0: adding both counts the car twice.

Example

Input: $450 payment, $130 insurance, 12,000 miles at 30 MPG and $3.50, $600 maintenance, $150 fees, $40 other

Result: About $799.17 a month, $9,590.00 a year, $28,770.00 over 3 years and $47,950.00 over 5.

Questions

What does it cost to own a car?

Add the payment, insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration and fees, and any parking or tolls. This page does that from your own numbers, per month and per year.

Why is there a "loss in value" line?

A car is worth less each year. If you paid cash, that loss is part of the cost. If you finance, the payment already covers the car, so enter 0 to avoid counting it twice.

Are the 5-year numbers a forecast?

No. They are the yearly total times five, which assumes nothing changes.
