Fuel Savings Calculator

How much would better gas mileage save?

Enter two MPG values, your yearly miles and the gas price to see how much better gas mileage saves.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Compares two MPG values for your miles and gas price and shows how much the better one saves a year, a month and over five years. It counts fuel only.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current MPG and the MPG of the other vehicle (or the improved MPG).
  2. Enter the miles you drive in a year and the price of a gallon of gas.
  3. Read the yearly saving first, then the monthly and 5-year figures and the gallons saved.

The vehicle you are thinking of, or the improved MPG.

How it works

Gallons used in a year are the miles divided by the MPG. At 12,000 miles, 25 MPG uses 480 gallons and 35 MPG uses about 342.9 gallons.

The cost is the gallons times the price. At $3.50, that is $1,680 and $1,200, so the better MPG saves $480 a year, $40 a month and $2,400 over 5 years.

The 5-year number is the yearly saving times 5, so it assumes the price and your miles stay the same.

Assumptions

  • The gas price and the miles are yours: this page does not know current prices.
  • Fuel only: it leaves out the price of the vehicle, insurance and everything else, so it is not the cost of switching vehicles.
  • The same calculation answers "how much is 1 MPG worth?": enter the current MPG and the current MPG plus one.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The 35.0 MPG vehicle saves about $480.00 a year in fuel. That is about $40.00 a month and $2,400.00 over 5 years, if the price and your miles stay the same.

Questions

How much is 1 MPG worth?

Enter your MPG and your MPG plus one. At 12,000 miles and $3.50, going from 25 to 26 MPG saves about $65 a year. It is worth more at low MPG than at high MPG.

Does a higher MPG always save money?

On fuel, yes. But a vehicle with better MPG may cost more to buy or insure, which this page does not count.

Why does the savings figure change when I change the price?

Savings are gallons saved times the price per gallon, so a higher price makes the same gallons worth more.
