Trade-In Equity Calculator

Do I have equity in my car?

See whether your car is worth more than you owe, and what that does to the next purchase.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Subtracts what you owe from your trade-in value to show equity or negative equity, and what is left to pay on a new car before tax and fees.

How to use it

  1. Enter the trade-in value you were offered or expect, and the amount you still owe on the car.
  2. Optionally enter the new car's price and a down payment.
  3. Read whether you have equity or negative equity, and the amount left to pay before tax and fees.

What you were offered or expect for the car.

0 if the car is paid off.

Before tax and fees.

How it works

Equity is the trade-in value minus what you owe: $12,000 - $9,500 = $2,500. If you owe more than the car is worth, the result is negative: $8,000 - $10,000 = -$2,000 of negative equity.

Left to pay is the new price minus the down payment minus the equity: $30,000 - $2,000 - $2,500 = $25,500. A negative equity adds to it: with $8,000 against $10,000 owed and nothing down, a $30,000 car leaves $32,000.

Assumptions

  • The trade-in value is the number you entered. It is not a valuation of your car.
  • Sales tax and fees are not included, because how a trade-in is treated for tax differs by place and this page does not assume it.
  • Negative equity is not erased by a trade: if it is rolled into the next loan it is added to what you borrow.

Example

Input: $12,000 trade-in value, $9,500 owed, $30,000 new car, $2,000 down

Result: Equity of $2,500.00: the car is worth more than you owe. Left to pay on the new car: $25,500.00, before tax and fees.

Questions

What is negative equity?

It means you owe more on the car than it is worth. For example, a car worth $8,000 with $10,000 owed has $2,000 of negative equity.

What happens to negative equity when I trade in?

It does not disappear. If it is rolled into the new loan, it is added to the amount you borrow. This page shows the effect before tax and fees.

Does this tell me what my car is worth?

No. You enter the value, from an offer or your own estimate. The page does the subtraction.
