About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Shows how much value a car could lose from your own estimate of a later value or a yearly percentage. Future values are estimates.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you know a later value or a yearly percentage.
  2. Enter the purchase price, the years and the later value or percentage.
  3. Read the estimated loss, then the percentage, the yearly average and the year-by-year values.

How it works

From a later value: $30,000 to $18,000 in 4 years loses $12,000, which is 40%, or $3,000 a year on average.

The steady yearly rate that gets there is 1 - (18,000 / 30,000)^(1/4) = 11.99%.

From a rate: the value after k years is price x (1 - rate)^k. $30,000 at 15% for 3 years is $18,423.75.

Formulas and details
  • Loss = price - later value. Loss share = loss / price.
  • Steady yearly rate = 1 - (later value / price)^(1 / years). Value after k years = price x (1 - rate)^k.

Assumptions

  • Future values are estimates built from the numbers you enter. This page does not know what any vehicle will be worth.
  • An estimated resale value is never a guarantee.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Under these numbers, the vehicle would lose about $12,000.00 in 4 years, about 40% of its price. That is roughly $3,000.00 a year on average, leaving an estimated value of $18,000.00. This is an ESTIMATE, not a prediction.

Questions

How fast does a car lose value?

This page does not know. Enter your own estimate and it shows what that means in dollars.

Is the steady rate real?

It is the single yearly rate that connects your price and your estimated later value. Real values do not fall in a straight pattern.
