EV Cost Per Mile Calculator

What does an EV cost per mile?

Enter your EV's efficiency and your electricity price to see the cost per mile.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Finds an electric car's cost per mile from its efficiency (miles per kWh or kWh per 100 miles) and your electricity price.

How to use it

  1. Enter the efficiency and choose its unit: miles per kWh or kWh per 100 miles.
  2. Enter your electricity price per kWh and a charging loss (an assumption you can change).
  3. Read the cost per mile and per 100 miles.

An assumption you can change. 0 ignores it.

How it works

The two efficiency units are inverses: 3.5 miles per kWh is 100 / 3.5 = 28.57 kWh per 100 miles.

Cost per mile = price per kWh / (miles per kWh x (1 - loss)): $0.16 / (3.5 x 0.90) = 5.08 cents.

Assumptions

  • Efficiency changes with speed, weather and load: use the figure from your own car.
  • The price and the loss are yours. Set the loss to 0 to ignore it.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: It costs about 5.1 cents per mile, or about $5.08 per 100 miles. At $0.16 per kWh and 3.50 miles per kWh.

Questions

What is kWh per 100 miles?

The energy used to drive 100 miles. Lower is better. 28.6 kWh per 100 miles is 3.5 miles per kWh.

How does this compare with gas?

The Gas vs EV Cost Calculator puts the two side by side.
