EV Charging Time Calculator

How long will an EV take to charge?

Enter the energy to add and the charger power to estimate the charging time.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Estimates how long an electric car takes to charge from the energy to add and the charger power, and says that real charging can slow near full.

How to use it

  1. Enter the energy you want to add in kWh.
  2. Enter the charger power in kW (printed on the charger) and a charging loss.
  3. Read the estimated time in hours and minutes.

Printed on the charger or its specification.

An assumption you can change.

How it works

The energy drawn from the charger is the energy added divided by (1 - loss): 45 / 0.90 = 50 kWh.

Time is that energy divided by the charger power: 50 / 7.2 kW = 6.94 hours, about 6 hours 57 minutes.

Assumptions

  • Real charging can be slower: many vehicles slow down as the battery fills (taper) or limit the power they accept.
  • The loss is an assumption you can change.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Charging would take about 6 hours 57 minutes. Adding 45.0 kWh with a 7.2 kW charger and a 10% loss.

Questions

Why does charging slow down near full?

Many vehicles reduce the charging rate as the battery fills. This page uses a steady rate, so the real time can be longer.

What is a kW?

The charger's power. More kW adds energy faster. The energy added is measured in kWh.
