EV Charging Cost Calculator

How much does it cost to charge an EV?

Enter the battery and charge levels (or the kWh added) and your electricity price to see what a charge costs.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Estimates what an electric car charge costs from the battery size and charge levels (or the kWh added) and your electricity price, with a charging loss you can change.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you know the battery size and charge levels, or the kWh added.
  2. Enter your electricity price per kWh and the charging loss (an assumption you can change).
  3. Read the cost of the charge first, then the monthly and yearly cost if you entered the charges per month.

From your bill or the charging station: this page does not know your rate.

An assumption you can change: energy lost between the wall and the battery. 0 ignores it.

How it works

A 75 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80% takes in 75 x 0.60 = 45 kWh.

With a 10% loss, the energy drawn from the wall is 45 / 0.90 = 50 kWh. At $0.16 per kWh that is $8.00.

Eight charges a month are $64, and twelve months are $768.

Assumptions

  • The electricity price is yours: this page does not know your rate. Home and public charging usually differ.
  • The charging loss is an assumption you can change. Set it to 0 to ignore it.
  • Real charging can differ because of temperature, charger and vehicle.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: That charge costs about $8.00. 45.0 kWh goes into the battery, and about 50.0 kWh is drawn from the wall at $0.16 per kWh.

Questions

It is the energy you add (plus the loss) times your price per kWh. Enter your own battery and price for your answer.

Where do I find my price per kWh?

On your electricity bill for home charging, or on the charging station for public charging.
