Bulk Buy Waste Calculator

Is bulk still cheaper if I waste some?

Enter the packages and how much of the bulk one you will use to see if it is still cheaper.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Shows whether the bulk package is still cheaper if you do not use all of it, and how much of it you must use to break even.

How to use it

  1. Enter the regular and the bulk package prices, sizes and units.
  2. Enter the share of the bulk package you expect to use.
  3. Read the smallest share that makes bulk worthwhile and the cost per unit used.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

The cost per unit used is the price divided by the size you actually use. $12.80 for 64 oz used 75% is $12.80 / 48 oz = $0.267 per ounce, against $0.25 for the regular package.

Bulk breaks even when you use at least (bulk cost per unit) / (regular cost per unit) of it: 0.20 / 0.25 = 80%.

Assumptions

  • The share you use is your own estimate. This page does not predict spoilage.
  • Whatever you do not use is still paid for.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The bulk package is cheaper per oz only if you use at least 80% of it. Using only 75% of it, the bulk package costs about 6.2% MORE per oz used than the regular package.

Questions

Is bulk cheaper if some of it goes bad?

Only if you still use enough of it. The page gives the share at which it stops being cheaper.

How do I estimate how much I will use?

From how fast you use it and how long it keeps. This page takes your number.
