Is Buying in Bulk Cheaper?

Is buying in bulk actually cheaper?

Enter a regular and a bulk package to see whether bulk costs less per unit.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Compares a regular and a bulk package per unit and says whether bulk really costs less, with the share you must use to break even.

How to use it

  1. Enter the price and size of the regular package, and its unit.
  2. Enter the price and size of the bulk package, and its unit.
  3. Read YES or NO and the percent, then the cost per unit of each.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Sizes of the same kind are converted to one unit, so ounces and pounds compare. 16 oz at $4.00 is $0.25 an ounce; 64 oz at $12.80 is $0.20 an ounce.

The bulk package costs (0.25 - 0.20) / 0.25 = 20% less per ounce. If you use only part of it, it breaks even at 0.20 / 0.25 = 80% of the package used.

Assumptions

  • This assumes you use all of both. The Bulk Buy Waste Calculator shows what happens if you use less.
  • A weight cannot be compared with a count: use the same kind of unit.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: YES: the bulk package costs about 20% less per oz.

Questions

Is the bigger package always cheaper per ounce?

No. Sometimes the bigger package costs more per ounce. Enter both to see.

How much do I have to use for bulk to pay off?

The page shows the share at which the bulk package costs the same per unit used. In the example it is 80%.
