How it works
Words are runs of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. Characters are counted as Unicode characters, so an emoji counts once.
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, a commonly cited average for adults reading silently. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute. Real speeds vary by person and text.
A sentence ends at a period, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations such as "e.g." can make the sentence count run slightly high.

Questions
Does it count hyphenated words as one word?
Yes. "well-known" is one word because there is no space in it.

Yes. Anything separated by whitespace counts, including numbers and symbols standing alone.
