Free Shipping vs Paying for Shipping

Is free shipping actually cheaper?

Enter two items with their shipping to see which costs less delivered.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Compares the delivered price (item, shipping and fees) of two items, so free shipping is never mistaken for a saving by itself.

How to use it

  1. Enter item A's price and shipping (0 for free shipping).
  2. Enter item B's price and shipping.
  3. Read which costs less delivered, and by how much.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Delivered price = item price + shipping + fees. A $50 item with free shipping is $50.00; a $43 item with $9 shipping is $52.00.

The first costs $2.00 less delivered, even though its price tag is higher.

Assumptions

  • Tax, returns and delivery speed are not compared.
  • "Free shipping" is only a saving if the delivered price is lower.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Item A costs $2.00 less delivered, once shipping and fees are counted.

Questions

Is free shipping actually cheaper?

Only if the delivered price is lower. Compare the item price plus shipping.

What about fees?

Enter them in the fees box and they are added.
