Which Deal Is Better?

Which deal is better?

Enter two offers to see which one costs less for the number of items you are buying.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Compares two offers (percent off, dollar off, X for $Y, buy some get some free, or a price plus shipping) for the same items and says which costs less and by how much.

How to use it

  1. Enter how many items you are buying.
  2. For each deal, choose its kind and enter the price of one item and the deal details.
  3. Read which deal costs less and by how much, then the cost of each.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Each deal is turned into what it costs to get the same number of items. 20% off an $80 item is $80 - $16 = $64.00; $15 off the order is $80 - $15 = $65.00. The difference is $1.00.

"X for $Y" counts whole groups at the deal price and the rest at the single price. "Buy 1 get 1 free" counts whole groups and the leftover item at full price. A shipping charge is added once.

Assumptions

  • A deal that needs more items than you want to buy is not better for you: change the number of items to test it.
  • Retailer rules, such as whether a coupon stacks, are not known: only the arithmetic of the numbers you enter.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Deal A is the better deal: it costs $1.00 less (1.5% less) for 1 item.

Questions

Is buy one get one free better than 30% off?

It depends on how many items you buy. For two items, BOGO is 50% off, which beats 30% off; for one item it saves nothing. Enter both with your quantity.

Is 20% off better than $15 off?

On an $80 item 20% saves $16 and $15 saves $15. On a $50 item the dollar coupon saves more. The answer depends on the price.
