Recipe Cost Calculator

How much does a recipe cost per serving?

Find out what a recipe costs, and what each serving costs, from your own prices.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Works out what a recipe costs and what each serving costs from the prices you enter, charging only for the part of each package you use.

How to use it

  1. Say how many servings the recipe makes.
  2. Write each ingredient on its own line: the amount used, then @, then the price per package, for example 2 cups flour @ 4.50 per 5 lb.
  3. Read the cost per serving, the total and the cost of each line.
  4. If a line cannot be priced, read the reason beside it.

Use your own prices. Cups can be compared with pounds only for ingredients this page has a weight for.

How it works

For each line the page works out what share of the package you use and multiplies it by the price. Two cups of flour is about 250 g, a little over half a pound, so from a 5 pound bag that is about a ninth of $4.50, which is 50 cents. Three eggs from a dozen is a quarter of $3.60, or 90 cents.

When the amount used and the package are in different kinds of unit (cups used, pounds bought) the page can convert them only for an ingredient it has a weight for. Otherwise it says so instead of guessing.

Each line is rounded to the cent, the total is the sum of the lines, and the cost per serving is the total divided by the servings.

No store prices are used: every price is the one you type.

Assumptions

  • Prices are the ones you enter.
  • Cups are compared with pounds or grams only for ingredients with a typical weight on file (an estimate).
  • Waste, trimming and leftovers are not counted.

Example

Input: 2 cups flour @ 4.50 per 5 lb; 3 eggs @ 3.60 per 12; 4 servings

Result: $0.35 per serving. Flour 50 cents, eggs 90 cents, $1.40 in all.

Questions

How do I write an ingredient line?

The amount and ingredient, then @, then the price, then per and the package size: 1 cup sugar @ 3 per 4 lb.

What if I only use part of a package?

That is the point: the page prices just the part you use.

Why does it say a line cannot be priced?

The units could not be compared, for example cups of an ingredient with no weight on file against a package sold by the pound.

Are my prices stored?

No. Everything stays in your browser.
