How it works

A cup holds a fixed amount of space but different foods weigh different amounts per cup, so converting grams to cups only makes sense for a named ingredient. The page uses a typical weight per US cup for each of 24 common ingredients and shows the one it used.

For example, 200 g is 1 cup of granulated sugar (200 g per cup) but 1 3/5 cups of all-purpose flour (125 g per cup). The page converts with plain arithmetic: grams divided by grams per cup.

The result is an estimate. Real weights change with the brand and with how the food is packed: flour that is scooped weighs more than flour that is spooned and leveled. If your recipe gives grams, weighing is the more accurate way.

Assumptions

  • One US cup is about 237 mL.
  • Weights per cup are typical household-measure values, shown on the page and labelled as estimates.
  • An ingredient that is not in the list cannot be converted; the page does not guess.

Example

Input: 250 grams of all-purpose flour

Result: 250 grams of all-purpose flour is about 2 cups, using 125 g per cup. It is an estimate.

Questions

How many cups is 200 grams of flour?

About 1 3/5 cups, using 125 g per cup for all-purpose flour.

Why does 200 grams of sugar give a different number of cups?

Sugar is denser than flour: a cup of granulated sugar weighs about 200 g, so 200 g is 1 cup.

How should I measure flour in cups?

Spoon it into the cup and level it off. Scooping with the cup packs the flour and can add 20% or more.

Is this exact?

No. It is an estimate, and the page says so. Use a scale where the recipe gives weight.
