Follow-Up Timing Helper

When should I follow up after applying?

Say where you are in the process to see whether it is too soon to follow up and when to do it.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Say what happened and how many days ago. See whether it is too soon to follow up, when a polite time is, and whether to send a thank-you note.

How to use it

  1. Choose what happened: an application, a screening, an interview, a final interview, a recruiter message or an offer question.
  2. Enter the days since then, any timeline they gave you and how many follow-ups you have sent.
  3. Read the headline, why, and the steps to take next.

If they said "we will be in touch within two weeks", enter 14.

How it works

Each situation has a common waiting time: about 10 days after applying, 5 after a screening, 7 after an interview or final interview, 3 after a recruiter message and 2 after an offer question.

If they gave you a timeline, the polite time is two days after it. Each extra follow-up waits about a week longer, and after two follow-ups the advice is to move on.

A short thank-you note is suggested within a day after a screening or interview.

Assumptions

  • These are common, polite practices, not rules. Employers differ, and their own instructions come first.
  • It cannot tell you what a particular employer is doing. Silence does not always mean no.
  • Nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Probably too soon. A common time to follow up on an application is in about 5 more days.

Questions

How long should I wait to follow up after applying?

Many people wait a week or two. If the posting has a closing date, wait until after it. This tool counts from your date and any timeline you were given.

When should I send a thank-you note?

Within a day of a screening or interview, ideally the same day or the next morning.

How many times can I follow up?

One or two polite messages is common. After that, it is usually better to keep applying elsewhere.
