Towing Weight Calculator

Is my trailer within my towing capacity?

Enter your vehicle's towing capacity and your trailer's weight to compare them.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Compares a trailer's weight and tongue weight with the towing capacity and payload you enter. It is not a safety check.

How to use it

  1. Enter the towing capacity from your owner's manual and the loaded trailer weight.
  2. Enter the tongue weight as a percent of the trailer, or in pounds if you know it.
  3. Optionally enter the payload rating and what you carry in the vehicle.

From your vehicle's owner's manual: this page does not know any vehicle's rating.

Leave empty if you enter the tongue weight in pounds below.

If you know it, it is used instead of the percent.

How it works

The trailer is compared with the capacity you entered: 6,000 lb against 7,000 lb is 1,000 lb below.

The tongue weight is the percent times the trailer (10% of 6,000 = 600 lb), and it counts against the payload: 400 + 300 + 600 = 1,300 lb of a 1,500 lb rating, 200 lb left.

Assumptions

  • Calculated estimates are not a substitute for your vehicle manufacturer's specifications or professional inspection and advice.
  • This page never knows a vehicle's towing capacity. It compares only the numbers you type.
  • It does not check the hitch, the axle ratings or the combined weight, and it never says towing is safe.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Based on the values you entered, the trailer is about 1,000 lb below the towing capacity you entered, and the payload is within the rating you entered. This compares the numbers you entered. It does not say that towing is safe.

Questions

What is tongue weight?

The downward weight a trailer puts on the hitch. It counts against the vehicle's payload.

Does this tell me I can tow it?

No. It compares your numbers with the ratings you entered. Check every rating in the owner's manual.
