About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Adds passengers, cargo, accessories and tongue weight and compares the total with the payload rating you enter. It is not a safety check.

How to use it

  1. Find the payload rating on your vehicle's label or in the owner's manual and enter it.
  2. Enter the weights of passengers, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue weight.
  3. Read how far below or over the rating you entered the total is.

From the label on the driver-door jamb or the owner's manual: this page does not know any vehicle's rating.

0 if you are not towing.

How it works

The total load is the sum of what you entered: 400 + 300 + 50 + 200 = 950 lb.

Remaining = the rating you entered minus the total: 1,500 - 950 = 550 lb below the rating.

Assumptions

  • Calculated estimates are not a substitute for your vehicle manufacturer's specifications or professional inspection and advice.
  • This page does not know any vehicle's rating. Verify it on the certification label or in the manual.
  • It does not say that a load is safe.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Based on the values you entered, the load is about 550 lb below the payload rating you entered. 950 lb of the 1,500 lb rating is used.

Questions

What is payload?

The weight a vehicle is rated to carry, including passengers, cargo and the tongue weight of a trailer. Its rating is on the vehicle's label and in the owner's manual.

Does this tell me my load is safe?

No. It only adds the weights you enter and compares them with the rating you enter.
