Fill in the form and your answer will appear here.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

The price per unit is the price divided by the size: 16 oz for $4.00 is $0.25 an ounce; 14 oz for $4.00 is $0.2857 an ounce.

The effective change is 0.2857 / 0.25 - 1 = 14.29%. The package is 12.5% smaller while the sticker price did not change.

Assumptions

  • The sizes and prices are the ones you enter. This page does not know whether a product changed.
  • Units are converted when they are the same kind, such as pounds and ounces.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The effective price per oz went up about 14.3% even though the price did not change.

Questions

What is shrinkflation?

When a package gets smaller and the price stays the same or rises, so you pay more per unit. This page works out how much more.

Is a price increase the same thing?

No. With a price increase the size stays the same. The percent change per unit shows both.
