About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Shows what premium gas costs compared with regular per fill-up, per month and per year. It compares cost only and never says which grade a vehicle can use.

How to use it

  1. Enter the price per gallon of regular and of premium.
  2. Enter the gallons you put in per fill-up and how many fill-ups you do per month.
  3. Read the yearly difference first, then the monthly and per-fill-up figures.

How it works

The difference per fill-up is (premium price - regular price) x gallons: ($4.10 - $3.40) x 12 = $8.40.

Four fill-ups a month make $33.60 a month, and 12 months make $403.20 a year.

Assumptions

  • This compares cost only. It does not say which fuel grade a vehicle can or should use.
  • Use the fuel grade recommended or required by your vehicle manufacturer.
  • The prices are the ones you enter: this page does not know current prices.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Premium costs about $403.20 more per year than regular. This compares cost only. Use the fuel grade recommended or required by your vehicle manufacturer.

Questions

Is premium gas worth it?

This page cannot say. It shows what the price difference adds up to. The fuel grade your vehicle needs is in its owner's manual.

What if premium is cheaper?

The page says so and shows the saving as a positive amount.
