Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Sale price = original price x (1 - percent off). So original = sale price / (1 - percent off).

An $80 sale price after 20% off: $80 / 0.80 = $100.00, so you saved $20.00.

Assumptions

  • This undoes a percent discount. It cannot tell whether the original price was ever really charged.
  • The percent off must be less than 100.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The price before the discount was $100.00.

Questions

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount as a decimal. For 20% off, divide by 0.80.

Why is it not just adding 20%?

Because 20% off is 20% of the original price, not of the sale price. $80 plus 20% is $96, not $100.
