Grocery List Cost Estimator

How much will my grocery list cost?

Type your list as "item, quantity, price" to see what it adds up to.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Adds up a shopping list typed as lines of item, quantity and price into a total with category subtotals. It stays in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Type one item per line: the item, the quantity and the price of one (for example milk, 2, 3.49).
  2. Add a category after the price if you want subtotals (for example dairy).
  3. Read the total and each line.

Fill in the form and your answer will appear here.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Each line = quantity x the price of one, rounded to the cent. Milk 2 x $3.49 is $6.98.

The total is the sum of the lines, and a category subtotal is the sum of its lines.

Assumptions

  • The prices are the ones you type: this page does not know any store's prices.
  • Tax and bag fees are not included. The list stays in your browser and is never sent or saved.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Your list of 4 items would cost about $16.90.

Questions

What format does the list use?

One item per line with commas: the name, the quantity and the price of one. A fourth part names a category.

What if a line is wrong?

The page names the line number and what to fix.
