Enter the price, the cash discount and your card reward to see which comes out lower.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Compares paying cash at a discount with paying by card and earning a reward, and says which comes out lower.

How to use it

  1. Enter the purchase price.
  2. Enter the discount for paying cash and the reward your card earns.
  3. Read which comes out lower and by how much.

Fill in the form and your answer will appear here.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Cash price = price less the discount: $100 less 3% is $97.00.

Card price net of the reward = price less the reward on the full price: $100 less 2% is $98.00. Cash is $1.00 lower.

Assumptions

  • This does not count card interest. If you carry a balance, the interest can be more than the reward.
  • The reward is the percent you enter: points programs and limits differ.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The cash discount comes out $1.00 lower: $97.00 in cash against $98.00 net by card.

Questions

If the discount is bigger than your reward, yes, as long as you pay the card off. Enter your numbers.

What if I carry a balance?
