How it works

The amount financed is the price + sales tax + fees - the down payment - the trade-in value + what is owed on the trade-in. On $30,000 at 7% with $500 of fees and $3,000 down it is $29,600.

The payment is the level-payment formula: P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1) with r = APR / 12; at 0% it is P / n. $29,600 at 6% for 60 months is $572.25.

Total of the payments is the payment times the months; interest is that minus the amount financed.

Formulas and details
  • r = APR / 100 / 12 (monthly rate); n = number of monthly payments.
  • Amount financed = price + sales tax + fees - down payment - trade-in value + amount owed on the trade-in.
  • Monthly payment M = P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1). When APR is 0%, M = P / n.
  • Total of the payments = M x n. Interest = total of the payments - P.

Assumptions

  • Sales tax is applied to the whole price and added to the loan, and fees are added to the loan. Tax rules differ by place, so check yours.
  • A lender's figure can differ by a few cents because each payment is rounded.
  • The rate, tax and fees are the ones you enter: this page knows no rates.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Your payment would be about $572.25 a month for 60 months. You would finance about $29,600.00, pay about $4,735.06 in interest, and about $37,335.06 in all, counting what you pay up front.

Questions

How much will a $35,000 car cost per month?

Enter 35,000 as the price with your own down payment, rate and term. At 6% for 60 months with nothing down and no tax or fees, it is about $677 a month.

What if I owe more on my trade-in than it is worth?

That negative equity is added to the loan, which raises the amount financed.

Can I compare two offers?

Yes: the Car Loan Comparison puts two or more offers side by side.
