Car Affordability Calculator

How much car can I afford?

Enter the monthly amount you are comfortable with and your costs to see the price it could support.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Takes the monthly budget YOU set, subtracts your insurance, fuel and maintenance estimates, and shows the price the rest could support.

How to use it

  1. Enter the total you are comfortable spending on the car each month.
  2. Enter your own monthly estimates of insurance, fuel and maintenance.
  3. Enter your down payment, rate, term, tax and fees, and read the price that fits.

The amount YOU are comfortable spending in all: payment, insurance, fuel and upkeep. This page does not suggest one.

How it works

The payment you can afford is your budget minus the other costs: $700 - $130 - $120 - $50 = $400.

That payment is turned into a price the same way as the Car Payment Reverse Calculator: the loan it pays off, plus down payment and trade-in, minus fees, divided by one plus the tax rate.

Formulas and details
  • Payment budget = your monthly budget - insurance - fuel - maintenance (each as you entered it).
  • Price = (A + down payment + trade-in value - amount owed on the trade-in - fees) / (1 + sales tax rate), where A = payment x (1 - (1 + r)^-n) / r and r = APR / 12.

Assumptions

  • The budget is your own number. This page does not say what you should spend and does not use your income.
  • The estimates for insurance, fuel and maintenance are yours: it does not know them.
  • Sales tax is applied to the whole price and fees are added to the loan.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Within the monthly budget you set, a payment of about $400.00 fits a vehicle priced up to about $21,673.00. Your $700.00 budget less $300.00 of insurance, fuel and maintenance leaves $400.00 for the payment.

Questions

How much car can I afford?
