WHOIS Lookup

Who is this domain registered with, and until when?

Enter a domain. You see its registrar, registration and expiry dates, name servers and status, read from the registry.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Shows a domain's registrar, registration and expiry dates, name servers and status, read from the registry.

How to use it

  1. Type a domain, such as example.com, and press Look up registration.
  2. Read the summary and the expiry line.
  3. Open the sections for the dates, name servers and status. Anything the registry does not publish shows "Not available".

Enter a domain name such as example.com. If you enter a subdomain, the registered domain is looked up.

Enter the address and your answer will appear here.

The domain you enter is sent to our server, which asks the registry that holds its record (found through the public IANA list) for its registration data. We do not visit the website, keep the domain or keep a history. Nothing you enter is sent to analytics.

How it works

Every domain is recorded by a registry. This tool asks that registry directly, using RDAP, the modern structured replacement for the old WHOIS system. The right registry is found through the public list that IANA publishes, so nothing here comes from a scraped page or a data reseller.

The answer is shown as the registry published it: the registrar, the registration date, the expiry date, the date the record last changed, the name servers and the status codes, each status explained in words (for example "Locked by the registrar against transfer to another registrar"). An expiry that is within 30 days or already past is flagged. If you enter a subdomain such as www.example.com, the registered domain example.com is looked up, and the page says so.

Registries normally hide the owner's personal details, and this tool never tries to find them. Some endings (many country domains) have no RDAP service; then the page says so rather than showing nothing. A field the registry does not publish is shown as "Not available", never guessed.

Assumptions

  • The record is what the registry published once; a registrar can show newer details.
  • Owner contact details are normally redacted by the registry and are not shown.
  • Dates are shown in UTC as the registry gives them.
  • The domain you enter is sent to our server, which asks the registry that holds its record (found through the public IANA list). We do not visit the website, keep the domain or keep a history. To limit abuse we count lookups per visitor and per domain for up to an hour under one-way codes.

Example

Input: example.com, registered through Example Registrar, Inc. on March 4, 2019 and expiring March 4, 2027

Result: example.com is registered through Example Registrar, Inc., since March 4, 2019, and the registration runs until March 4, 2027.

Questions

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

RDAP is the newer, structured version of WHOIS, run by the same registries. It answers in a standard format over the web. This tool uses RDAP.

Why is the owner not shown?

Registries normally hide the owner's personal details. This tool shows what the registry publishes and does not try to get around that.

Why does it say "No RDAP service"?

Some registries, mostly for country-code endings, have not published an RDAP server. That is a fact about the registry, not about the domain.

What does "client transfer prohibited" mean?

The registrar has locked the domain so it cannot be moved to another registrar without the owner unlocking it. It is a normal protection.
