How it works

The Institute of Medicine (2005) sets an Adequate Intake for total water of 3.7 liters a day for men and 2.7 liters for women aged 19 to 30. Total water includes drinks and food.

About 81% came from beverages and 19% from food in the survey data behind it, so 2.7 liters is about 2.2 liters from drinks.

The liters are converted to US fluid ounces (1 liter is 33.814 fl oz) and cups (8 fl oz).

Formulas and details
  • US fluid ounces = liters x 33.814.
  • Beverage share = total x 0.81.

Assumptions

  • Only the groups whose figures were read are offered. The reference covers ages 19 to 30.
  • The CDC states that needs vary with age, sex, pregnancy, activity and breastfeeding, so this is not a personal target.
  • It is not advice about how much to drink.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: The Institute of Medicine's reference for total water for a woman aged 19 to 30 is 2.7 liters a day, from drinks and food together. That is about 91 US fluid ounces (11.4 cups). Roughly 81% of intake comes from beverages in the survey data behind it, about 2.2 liters (74 fluid ounces).

Questions

Do I need eight glasses a day?

The page does not use that rule. It shows the published figure and says it covers all water, food included, for one age group.

Why is there no figure for my age?

Only figures from a page that was read are shown. Other groups are not made up.
