VIN Checker

Is this VIN valid?

Type a VIN to check that it is written correctly. Nothing is looked up or sent.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Checks that a VIN has 17 valid characters and a matching check digit. It runs in your browser, looks nothing up and sends nothing.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the 17-character VIN from the dashboard or the door label.
  2. Read whether the structure is valid and whether the check digit matches.
  3. Use the segments shown to read the VIN.

On the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver-door label. Checked in your browser and never sent anywhere.

How it works

A VIN has 17 characters and never uses I, O or Q. The ninth character is a check digit.

Each character has a value (the digits are themselves; letters follow a fixed table), each position has a weight, the products are added and divided by 11, and the remainder (10 is written X) should equal the ninth character.

For 1M8GDM9AXKP042788 the check digit works out to X, which matches.

Assumptions

  • This checks the form only. It does not decode the make, model or year, because that needs a vehicle database, which this site does not use.
  • The check digit rule is for vehicles made for North America. A mismatch can be a typing mistake or a vehicle from another region, so it does not prove a VIN wrong.
  • The VIN is checked in your browser and is never sent or stored.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: This VIN has a valid structure, and its check digit matches. This checks the form only. It does not look up the vehicle.

Questions

Where is the VIN?

On the dashboard near the windshield, on the driver-door label and on the registration and insurance papers.

Can this tell me the make and model?

No. It checks the form only. A lookup service would be needed for the vehicle details.

Is my VIN sent anywhere?

No. The check runs on this page.
