Transferable Skills Finder

What skills from my job transfer to another career?

Enter a job you have done to see skills that may carry over and kinds of work that use them.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Enter a job you have done and what you did. See the skills that commonly carry over and kinds of work where they are used.

How to use it

  1. Type your current or past job title, such as retail manager.
  2. Add a few things you did, in your own words (optional but it finds more).
  3. Read the skills and why each was listed, then the kinds of work that use several of them.

Adding duties finds skills the title alone would miss.

How it works

Your title is matched to a plain-English list of common skills for that kind of work, and your duties are scanned for words that point to a skill, such as "scheduled" or "trained".

Each kind of work is shown only when you share enough of its usual skills. The skills it shares with you are named.

Retail manager, for example, brings leadership, scheduling, inventory, customer service, conflict resolution, sales, training and operations.

Assumptions

  • The lists are general examples written for this site. They are not a government database and say nothing about pay, demand or openings.
  • Only keep a skill you truly have and can give an example of.
  • Nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: 8 skills that may carry over to 5 kinds of work.

Questions

What are transferable skills?

Skills that are useful in many kinds of work, such as leading a team, scheduling, handling complaints or keeping records.

Does this tell me what job to get?

No. It shows kinds of work that use skills you have. Look at real job postings to see what employers ask for.

What if my job is not listed?

Describe what you did in the duties box and it finds skills from your words.

How should I describe what I did?

Use your own words and the real verbs: the page scans your duties for words that point to a skill, such as "scheduled" or "trained", so a few concrete lines find more than a title alone.

Why is a kind of work not shown?

A kind of work is shown only when you share enough of its usual skills. Adding duties you truly did can bring more up; the lists are general examples, not a database of jobs.
