About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Adds up what several packages cost with a discount and sales tax, and the cost per unit.

  1. Enter the number of packages and the price of one.
  2. Enter any discount, your sales tax rate and the units in a package.
  3. Read the total and the cost per unit.

Everything is calculated in your browser: the prices and numbers you enter are never sent anywhere or stored. We do not know any store's prices or tax rates, and these results are arithmetic, not advice to buy.

How it works

Subtotal = packages x price: 6 x $4.99 = $29.94. A 10% discount takes off $2.99, leaving $26.95; 7% tax adds $1.89, for $28.84.

With 24 units a package, that is 144 units at about 20.0 cents each.

Assumptions

  • Each step is rounded to the cent once.
  • This adds up what you enter. It does not suggest stocking up: buying more than you will use costs money and space.

Example

Input: The starting values already in the form

Result: Stocking up on 6 packages would cost $28.84, or about 0.2 per unit for 144 units.

Questions

Does it work out the tax?

It uses the rate you enter. It does not look up a rate.

What is the cost per unit?

The total divided by all the units in all the packages.
