About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Rate ten things, from pay to commute to your manager, and how much each matters to you. See which favor staying, which favor leaving and what to check next.

How to use it

  1. For each factor you care about, choose which job is better and by how much. Leave the rest as "Does not apply".
  2. Set how much each factor matters to you.
  3. Read the headline, the factors on each side and the questions to check before you decide.

How it works

A little better is 1 point and much better is 2. Each is multiplied by how much the factor matters to you: a little is x1, some is x2, a lot is x3.

The points that favor leaving are added up, and so are the points that favor staying. If they are within about a tenth of the most possible, the headline says they are close.

Factors you called "a lot" that point strongly one way are listed separately, because totals can hide them.

Assumptions

  • It weighs only what you enter. It does not know your real jobs, your finances or your future.
  • It never says yes or no: the decision is yours.
  • Some factors, such as safety or how you are treated, can outweigh everything else, whatever the points say.
  • Nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Questions

How do I know if I should quit my job?

Compare what matters most to you, check the facts of any new job in writing and think about whether the problems could be fixed where you are. This tool helps you lay it out.

Why does it not just say stay or leave?

It cannot know your situation. It shows how the things you rated add up so you can see the trade-offs.

Can I compare real job offers?

Yes. The Job Offer Comparison tool puts pay, bonuses, benefits and costs side by side.
