How do I convert a picture to JPG or PNG?

Choose your pictures, pick a format and download the converted files. They never leave your device.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Convert pictures between PNG, JPG and WebP in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose one or more pictures (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF).
  2. Pick the format to convert to. For JPG and WebP, set the quality.
  3. Press Convert, then download each file or all of them.

Converting to JPG turns a transparent background white. WebP and PNG keep it. Your files are read and converted in this browser. They are not uploaded.

    How it works

Your browser opens the picture and draws it onto a hidden canvas, then saves the canvas in the format you chose. No file is sent to a server, because there is none involved.

PNG is lossless: nothing is lost, and transparency is kept. JPG and WebP are lossy: a lower quality gives a smaller file and a softer picture. JPG has no transparency, so a transparent background is filled with white.

The new file keeps the original name with the new ending. A picture converted to its own format gets "-converted" in the name so it never overwrites the original.

    Assumptions

    • The picture is converted as it looks on screen: it is not resized, and extra information such as the camera, date and location stored inside a photo is not copied across.
    • Which formats can be saved depends on your browser. If it cannot save WebP, the page says so and you can choose PNG or JPG.
    • Files over 50 MB, or pictures over 100 million pixels, are refused so the page does not freeze.
    • Your pictures are read and converted by your own browser. They are not uploaded, and nothing about them is sent or stored.

    Example

Input: holiday photo.png converted to JPG at 92% quality

Result: holiday photo.jpg, usually much smaller than the PNG. A transparent background turns white.

    Questions

    Is my picture uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser. You can switch off your internet connection after the page loads and it still works.

Why is my JPG background white?

JPG cannot hold transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Use PNG or WebP to keep them.

Does it remove location data from photos?

The converted picture is a fresh copy and does not carry the original's hidden camera and location details.
