How we calculated this

The balance grows month by month at the yearly return divided by 12, and your monthly amount is added at the end of each month, the same compound-growth rule as the Compound Interest calculator.

The goal is reached in the first month the balance is at least the goal.

For a date, the page solves for the monthly amount that makes the balance reach the goal exactly in that time, rounded up to the cent.

The other-timelines table shows the monthly amount needed to reach the goal in 1 to 20 years.

Formulas and details
  • Each month: balance = balance x (1 + rate / 12) + monthly saving.
  • The goal is reached in the first month the balance is at least the goal.
  • Monthly amount for a date = (goal - what current savings grow to) / (growth of $1 saved each month), rounded up to the cent.

Assumptions

  • The return is a steady rate you choose, not a promise. Real accounts and markets move up and down.
  • Deposits are made at the end of each month.
  • Left out: taxes on interest or gains, account fees and inflation.
  • Everything you enter, including any income or budget, is worked out in your browser and is never sent anywhere or saved.

Example

Input: A $20,000 goal with $2,000 saved so far, $400 a month and a 4% yearly return

Result: At $400 a month, you would reach $20,000 in about 3 years 6 months, putting in $16,800 and earning about $1,500.74 in growth.

Questions

What return should I use?

Use 0 for cash kept at home, or the rate your account pays. 4 is a placeholder, not a promise.

What if I leave the monthly amount blank?

Enter the years you want to take instead, and the page shows the monthly amount needed.

Does it include inflation?

No. A goal in today's dollars may cost more later if prices rise.

Why does saving a little more shorten the time so much?

More goes in each month and earns growth for longer. The what-ifs show the effect.
