How many tablespoons are in a cup?

Change an amount between kitchen units, and find out when a conversion needs an ingredient.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

Converts amounts between teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, milliliters, grams, ounces and pounds. Like units are exact; cups to grams needs an ingredient, because it changes with the food.

How to use it

  1. Type the amount. Fractions such as 1/2 and 1 1/2 work.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you want.
  3. To change between cups or spoons and grams or ounces, also choose the ingredient: it decides how much a cup weighs.
  4. Read the answer, the kitchen measure beneath it and whether it is exact or an estimate.

How it works

Changing between two measures of volume (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, milliliters) or between two measures of weight (grams, ounces, pounds) is exact: it uses only the definitions of the units. A US cup is 16 tablespoons, 48 teaspoons and 8 fluid ounces.

Changing between volume and weight is different, because a cup of flour, a cup of sugar and a cup of honey weigh different amounts. So the page asks which ingredient, uses a typical weight per cup for it (shown in the answer) and calls the result an estimate. If you pick no ingredient, it tells you it needs one instead of guessing.

A fluid ounce measures space and an ounce measures weight. They are not the same, except by coincidence for water, so the page keeps them apart.

The answer is also shown as a measure you could actually use in the kitchen, such as 1 5/8 cups, with "about" when it was rounded.

Assumptions

  • Cups, tablespoons and teaspoons are US measures: 1 cup is about 237 mL.
  • Weights per cup are typical values for household measures and vary with the brand and how an ingredient is packed. Use them as a guide.
  • Only ingredients with a weight on file can be converted between volume and weight. Others are reported as unavailable.

Example

Input: 1 1/2 cups to tablespoons

Result: 1.5 cups = 24 tablespoons. An exact conversion, because both are measures of volume.

Questions

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

There are 16 tablespoons in a US cup, and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon, so 48 teaspoons in a cup.

Why do I need to pick an ingredient to get grams?

Because grams measure weight and cups measure space. A cup of flour is about 125 g but a cup of sugar is about 200 g, so there is no single number for all foods.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?

No. A fluid ounce is a measure of volume, 1/8 of a cup. An ounce is a measure of weight. For water they are close, which is why people mix them up.

Are my amounts stored?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
