Can I Afford This Car?

Can I afford this car?

Enter the price and a few details and see what the car would really cost to own, not just the loan payment.

About this tool & how to use it

What it does

See what a car really costs each month, year and over five years: loan, taxes, fuel, insurance and upkeep, and how that compares with your own budget.

How to use it

  1. Enter the car price, your down payment, the loan length and the interest rate from your offer.
  2. Enter the miles you drive in a year. Open "More costs and options" to change fuel, tax, insurance and upkeep to match your own quotes.
  3. Optional: add your monthly take-home pay, your other monthly obligations or the most you want to spend on a car, and the answer compares the car with those.
  4. Press "Get a detailed answer" for the full breakdown, charts, side-by-side scenarios and a plain-language explanation of how the answer was worked out.

The price you would pay before sales tax and fees.

Cash you put in up front. A larger one means a smaller loan.

Use the rate in your loan offer. 7 is a placeholder to replace, not a quote.

Fuel or charging cost is worked out from this.

Optional. It is used only on this page to compare the car with your income. It is never sent or saved.

Rent or mortgage, other debts and the bills you must pay each month. Needed to see what is left after the car.

Your own limit for the whole monthly cost of the car, not just the payment.

More costs and options

Differs by state and county. 6 is a placeholder; the tax is added to the loan.

Dealer, title and registration fees at purchase.

Get a quote for this car. 150 is a placeholder.

An allowance for oil, tires, brakes and repairs. Replace it with your own figure.

Cars lose value as they age. Used only for the five-year view and not counted in the monthly cost.

How it works

The loan payment comes from the same car loan calculation used on the Car Loan Calculator page: the price plus sales tax, less your down payment, is the amount borrowed, paid back in equal monthly payments at the rate you enter.

Fuel is the miles you drive divided by the miles per gallon, times the price per gallon (or, for an electric car, the miles divided by the miles per kWh, times the price per kWh and a small charging loss). Insurance, maintenance and registration are the amounts you enter, spread over twelve months.

The monthly ownership cost is the sum of those parts. The five-year view adds the cash due at purchase, the loan payments made in five years and five years of the other costs, then shows what the car might be worth.

Only if you enter income, other obligations or a budget does the page compare the car with them. Cost of owning a car is not the same as whether you can afford it, so the page never decides that for you.

Formulas and details
  • Amount borrowed = price + price x tax rate - down payment. Monthly payment = amount x r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n), with r = rate / 12 and n the number of months.
  • Fuel per year = miles / miles per gallon x price per gallon. Electricity per year = miles x price per kWh / (miles per kWh x (1 - 0.10)).
  • Monthly ownership cost = loan payment + (fuel + insurance x 12 + maintenance + registration) / 12.
  • Value after t years = price x (1 - yearly loss)^t.

Assumptions

  • The interest rate, sales tax, insurance, maintenance, registration and yearly loss in value that fill the form are placeholders. Replace them with your own offer and quotes.
  • Costs are assumed to stay the same each year, with no inflation.
  • Left out: parking, tolls, fines, big repairs beyond your maintenance allowance, trade-ins, rebates and incentives.
  • The loan has a fixed rate and equal monthly payments. Your lender confirms the real terms and may round differently.
  • Everything you enter, including any income or budget, is worked out in your browser and is never sent anywhere or saved.

Example

Input: A $40,000 car, $4,000 down, 6% sales tax, a 7% loan for 60 months, 12,000 miles a year at 28 miles per gallon and $3.50 a gallon, $150 a month insurance and $900 a year of maintenance

Result: Based on the information provided, your estimated monthly ownership cost is $1,127.04: a $760.37 loan payment plus fuel, insurance, maintenance and registration.

Questions

Is a car affordable if I can make the loan payment?

Not necessarily. The loan payment is only part of the monthly cost: fuel, insurance and upkeep add to it. This page shows the full monthly cost, and compares it with your income or budget when you enter them.

Why does the page not say yes or no?

Whether you can afford a car depends on your other bills, savings and plans, which only you know. The page shows the cost and how it compares with the figures you enter.

Why is loss in value not in the monthly cost?

A car loses value as it ages, but that is not money leaving your account each month. It is shown in the five-year view so you can see the effect.

Where do the placeholder numbers come from?

They are round example figures so the page can answer at once. They are not looked up for your area, so replace them with your own.
