How to Use the Words From Letters

The Simple Answer

Words From Letters shows every word you can make from the letters you type, grouped by length. You choose whether words may use some of your letters, all of them, or only the longest words, and you can narrow the list with filters.

What the tool does

A word counts only if every one of its letters can be taken from the letters you typed, and each letter is used no more often than you typed it. The page checks a list of English words against your letters. Everything happens in your browser, and your letters are never sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type your letters, such as LETTER or A E R T S. Spaces and commas are fine, and you can use up to 15 letters.
  2. Choose Use any of my letters, Use all of my letters, or Show only the longest words.
  3. Press Find words. Open Filters for word length, starting or ending letters, a pattern like ?A??, a must-use letter, or letters to leave out.

A worked example

LETTER has two E and two T but only one L, so TELL is not offered because it needs two L. Use all of my letters finds the anagrams. A pattern fixes the word length and letter positions, with ? standing for any letter, so ?A?? finds four-letter words with A second.

Things to know

  • The word list is ENABLE, a public-domain word list. It includes valid game words that are uncommon and leaves out many proper names and recent words.
  • The list has no definitions and does not rank words by how familiar they are.
  • Another game or dictionary may accept or reject some words, so check the rules of the game you are playing.

Common questions

Can I find anagrams? Yes. Choose Use all of my letters.

Why is a word I know missing? The list is a game-style list. It may leave out proper names and newer words.
